The Pomeranian Voivodeship is one of the fastest-growing photovoltaic markets in Poland - and, at the same time, a region with several specific conditions that you won't find in guidebooks written „for Krakow”. Wind from the sea, variable cloudiness, salty air in the coastal zone and the highest electricity prices in the country - all of these affect how a PV installation should be designed in Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot and the surrounding area.

Sunshine in Pomerania - less than in the south, but still profitable

The first thing any honest photovoltaic dealer in the region will tell you: there is less sun here than in the Lesser Poland or Podkarpacie regions. Data IMGW for the multiannual period 1991-2020 confirm that the Pomeranian Voivodeship records 1 400-1 550 hours of sunshine per year, while the south of Poland achieves 1 600-1 750 hours. This is a difference of approximately 10-15%.

But what evens out the bill? Electricity prices in the Tri-city are among the highest in Poland - approx. 1,15-1,30 PLN/kWh on the G11 tariff. The more expensive the energy from the grid, the more each kilowatt hour from your own panels is worth. As a result, the payback time for photovoltaics in Gdansk is comparable to the centre of Poland, despite less sunshine.

In summer, the difference in sunshine between Pomerania and the south almost disappears - from May to August the monthly number of hours of sunshine is similar throughout Poland (approx. 180-220 h). A key difference emerges in winter: December-February in Pomerania yields a mere 20-40 h/month, vs. 50-80 h in the south. This is why energy storage is a particularly valuable addition to the plant here.

Marine climate and PV installation - what does it change technically?

A photovoltaic installation in Gdansk Jelitkowo or Sopot stands in completely different conditions than the same installation 200 km inland. The maritime climate brings with it several specific challenges:

1. air salinity and salt spray

In the area a few kilometres from the Baltic coast, the air contains microscopic salt particles, which settle on the panels and can accelerate the corrosion of construction elements. It is worth paying attention to the quality of the materials used as early as the offer selection stage.

  • Require certified panels IEC 61701 (salt spray resistance) - standard required in coastal areas
  • Substructure: Corrosion-resistant aluminium or high-grade steel - ask for grade and coating
  • MC4 connectors and cables: increased moisture resistance class (IP67-IP68)

2. strong winds and dynamic loads

The Pomeranian Voivodeship is one of the windiest regions in Poland. Storm winds from the Baltic Sea reach speeds of 60-80 km/h in autumn and winter, and in extreme cases exceed 100 km/h. The installation must be designed for the local wind conditions.

  • Static design: wind zone II (Pomeranian coastal strip) according to EN 1991-1-4

The Tricity is the largest RES market in the province. A few things to know choosing a photovoltaic installer in or around Gdańsk:

  • Dense development - the inner-city districts of Gdańsk and Gdynia (Wrzeszcz, Oliwa, Orłowo, Chylonia) have many multi-pitch and mansard roofs, requiring a custom design. Always ask for a design before signing a contract.
  • Energa Operator - connection procedures have local peculiarities; an experienced installer has already carried out dozens of applications and knows the current documentation requirements.
  • Turnaround time - in high season (April-September), the best companies have occupancy for 4-8 weeks ahead; it is worth planning ahead.
  • Historic properties - part of buildings in Gdansk (Main Town, Wrzeszcz) under conservation protection; assembly requires the consent of the conservation officer.

Beware of „outside” installers:

The large nationwide sales chains work intensively in the tri-city market, often subcontracting installation to subcontractors without local experience. Ask straightforwardly: who will physically do the installation and do they have implementations in Pomerania? A local team knows the specifics of Energa Operator, wind conditions and roof types in the region.

How to choose the power of a photovoltaic installation in Pomerania?

Due to the lower insolation than in the south, installers in the north of the country recommend a slight oversizing of the installation - by approx. 10-15% more in relation to the calculated demand. For example: a house with an annual consumption of 5 000 kWh, which in southern Poland would be served by a plant 5 kWp, in coastal areas requires 5.5-6 kWp.

The output for the calculation is your annual energy consumption from your bills for the last 12 months. A good installer always asks for this information - if he or she proposes power „off the top of their head”, without analysing your consumption, it's a warning sign.

Subsidies and photovoltaics Pomerania - programmes for 2026

Residents of the province have access to several sources of funding that can significantly reduce the cost of investment:

  • Thermal modernisation allowance - deduction up to PLN 53,000 from the PIT base. Available to any single-family homeowner, regardless of income. Can be combined with most other programmes.
  • My Current 2026 - to PLN 16,000 for energy storage only (no PV), eligible costs from 01.11.2025, call planned for Q2/Q3 2026 - date not yet confirmed.
  • Czyste Powietrze - the programme of the Voivodeship Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Gdańsk supports comprehensive thermo-modernisation (heat pump, insulation, windows). Note: in the current edition of the programme, PV installations are not directly supported - check the current scope at cleanepowietrze.gov.pl.
  • Municipal programmes - the municipalities of Gdańsk, Gdynia and some districts periodically announce their own funding from the WFOŚiGW or EU funds; it is worth checking the current status on the website of your municipality.

Practical advice:

The thermo-modernisation allowance and the NFOŚiGW grant (My Current / KPO for storage) can be combined - you deduct the amount less the grant received. With the installation of PV + energy storage, the total support reaches 25 000-35 000 PLN in real terms. A good installer should help you calculate the optimal financing option.

  • Realisations in the Pomeranian Voivodeship - ask for specific addresses or photos from the region.

The Pomeranian Voivodeship is a specific photovoltaic market. Lower insolation than in the south is compensated for by some of the highest electricity prices in Poland. The maritime climate requires components with higher resistance - and an installer who is experienced with local weather conditions and Energa Operator procedures.

Good questions asked before signing a contract are worth more than the lowest price on offer. A PV installation is an investment for 25 years - it is worth entrusting it to a company that will still be answering the phone from Gdansk, Gdynia or Slupsk in a year's time.
